Ariane 5 enters the final countdown for today’s flight with DirecTV-15 and SKY México-1

Arianespace’s Ariane 5 is at the Spaceport’s ELA-3 launch zone, ready for today's dual-passenger flight with DirecTV-15 and SKY México-1.

The final countdown is now underway for Arianespace’s Ariane 5 launch that will orbit two direct-to-home broadcast satellites – DirecTV-15 and SKY México-1 – from the Spaceport in French Guiana.

Designated Flight VA223 in the company’s numbering system, today’s mission is to be the workhorse heavy-lift vehicle’s second flight from the Spaceport so far in 2015, as well as its 79th launch overall.

Ariane 5’s liftoff is planned during a 1-hour, 24-minute launch window that opens at 6:16 p.m. local time in French Guiana. The mission’s total payload lift performance is estimated at 9,960 kg. – which includes 9,200 kg. for DirecTV-15 and SKY México-1, along with associated hardware for the launcher’s SYLDA dual-passenger dispenser system and satellite integration hardware.

DirecTV-15 is an Airbus Defence and Space-built satellite based on the Eurostar E3000 platform, and it will provide services in the Ku-, Ka- and R-bands for customers of U.S.-based DIRECTV.

SKY México-1 was produced by Orbital ATK, Inc. using its GEOStar-2™ platform. Equipped with Ku- and R-band transponders, this spacecraft will be operated for SKY México – which is owned by Mexico’s Grupo Televisa S.A.B. and DIRECTV.
